Plan it and they will come. Organizers hope to triple the number of teams participating in a softball tournament being held this Labor Day weekend to honor a George Mason University alumnus and firefighter. Kyle Wilson, BS Athletic Training ’05, was killed while searching for victims in a house blaze that broke out on April 16, 2007. The tournament honoring his memory is now in its third year.
“We started with 19 teams in 2011. This year we hope to have 60 teams,” says Charvis Campbell, assistant dean for University Life at George Mason’s Prince William Campus. Campbell will coach Team Mason in the Kyle Wilson Memorial Softball Tournament on Sunday, Aug. 31, at Braddock Park in Clifton, Va.
All net proceeds from the event will go to the George Mason University Foundation, which supports a scholarship fund in Wilson’s memory. Wilson was a member of Fire Station 12 in Woodbridge, Va. The scholarship in his name will be awarded to a Mason student in the College of Education and Human Development‘s School of Recreation, Health, and Tourism.
Team Mason includes faculty, staff and students, including Rachel Torres, a senior majoring in athletic training. “It’s such an honor to participate in Kyle Wilson’s name, as he died in the line of duty,” she says. Torres doesn’t mind taking time out of a holiday weekend to support a worthy cause. “Participating in this tournament has always been such a great time for athletic competition … and to spend time with friends and fellow classmates,” says the California native.
Darian Johnson will go to bat for Team Mason for a third year. “Anything that I can do to support a charity event like this one is important to me …. Being able to participate in a fun activity like softball is a bonus. It’s not about winning or losing,” says the senior, a sport management major who is originally from Cleveland, Ohio.
Registration is still open for those who want to join Team Mason or form their own team. Organizers will provide bats, balls and a few extra gloves, but participants are encouraged to bring their own equipment if possible.
Scholarship donations can be made to Kyle Wilson Memorial Scholarship, George Mason University Foundation, 4400 University Drive, MS 1A3, Fairfax, VA 22030 or by visiting the Giving to Mason website.
