Transforming the Holiday Spirit: Mason Pitches in for First #GivingTuesday

Black Friday and Cyber Monday have become synonymous with the holiday “buying” season. But this year, Mason is helping to launch a national effort focusing on the holiday “giving” season by participating in #GivingTuesday on Nov. 27.
#GivingTuesday has put social media at the heart of its approach to building support and raising awareness about the power of giving. This first-of-its-kind effort harnesses the collective power of a blend of partners — charities, families, businesses and individuals — to transform how people think about, talk about and participate in the giving season.
This year, Mason is focusing its #GivingTuesday efforts on increasing philanthropy and volunteer recruitment for the Early Identification Program (EIP). In collaboration with seven local public school systems, Mason’s EIP provides access to educational resources for middle and high school students who will be the first in their families to attend a college or university. Currently, 600 students are pursuing higher education as a result of the EIP and its partners.
“We’re excited about the possibilities that focusing on EIP might provide,” says Marc Broderick, vice president for development and alumni affairs. “By participating with so many partners nationally and globally, Mason has the opportunity to raise both funds and awareness for this innovative and successful program, opening up new opportunities for students in the local area to access higher education.”
