George Mason University’s College of Visual and Performing Arts is pleased to announce its ninth annual ARTS by George! gala on Saturday, Sept. 27, 2014, at 5 p.m. One of the premier arts events in Northern Virginia, this outstanding benefit event is dedicated to supporting student scholarships in visual arts, dance, music, theater, computer game design, film and video studies and arts management, as well as the Great Performances at Mason series at George Mason’s Center for the Arts.
“Some are surprised to learn that George Mason University has world-class artists-in-training, plus a student population that wants to experience great arts performances,” says Mark Shugoll, who returns to serve as the event’s co-chair of ARTS by George! with his wife, Merrill. “ARTS by George! funds scholarships so students can mature as artists under the tutelage of Mason’s outstanding faculty. It also supports the Great Performances at Mason series in the Concert Hall, allowing all Mason students in any discipline to attend performances by international artists for free. And it is the most fun gala in town, brimming with wonderful performances and delicious food.”
During the event, guests can visit the college’s classrooms, studios and performance spaces throughout Mason’s arts complex on the Fairfax Campus, and watch and participate in fascinating showcases of performances and exhibitions by gifted student and faculty artists. The evening’s festivities include a silent auction of distinctive arts-related items and experiences. Highlights include an exclusive behind-the-scenes tour of PBS’ “Washington Week with Gwen Ifill”; attire by fashion designer Nanette Lepore; and luxury vacation packages to Florida, New York City, Mexico and China.
The evening culminates in the Center for the Arts Concert Hall with a gala performance by Tony, Grammy and Olivier Award winner Patti LuPone, who takes the stage for an unforgettable concert titled “Coulda, Woulda, Shoulda … Played That Part.” included will be songs from “Hair,” “Bye Bye Birdie,” “Funny Girl,” “West Side Story” and “Peter Pan,” along with songs from her commanding portrayals of Argentine first lady Eva Perón in “Evita” and Madame Rose in “Gypsy.”
Following the performance, ARTS by George! guests are welcomed onto the Concert Hall stage for a postshow champagne and dessert reception.
