From April 13 to 19, National Student Employment Week celebrates the hard work of student employees at colleges and universities across the country. George Mason University’s student employees are no exception — the demands of school and work keep them busy. More than just a way to earn a paycheck, on-campus jobs help students gain professional experience and develop skills to use in their future careers.
“Having an on-campus job makes me more mindful of my time, so I set priorities to meet the responsibilities of work and school,” says Colleen O’Brien, a part-time student employee at George Mason’s Arlington Campus. “Working on campus also makes me feel more connected to Mason, because I am here for both school and work.”
University Information, which employs about 50 student staff members across Mason’s campuses, celebrates National Student Employment Week every year to thank its student staff for their service to the university. To date, student wage employees within University Information have assisted nearly 215,000 visitors and callers to Mason.
In addition to recognition throughout the week, University Information student staff members will enjoy a finale event at the Corner Pocket with pizza, games and awards to recognize their professional accomplishments throughout the year.
“Student employees learn skills that they can take into their future careers — customer service, professionalism in the workplace and communication,” says Sarah Kersey, who manages a team of student employees for University Information at Mason’s Prince William Campus. “Our student staff members have great energy. Their perspective as students and knowledge of Mason translates well into the work they do with University Information.”
On-campus jobs provide students with a supportive and enriching environment in which to gain professional experience. National Student Employment Week is a great time to thank student employees for everything they do at Mason.
