George Mason University public and international affairs professor Frank H. Shafroth has been selected to receive the Bernard P. Friel medal for distinguished service in the field of public finance from the National Association of Bond Lawyers (NABL).

Shafroth will receive the award during the NABL’s 38th annual national workshop in Chicago on Sept. 25.

“This was an unexpected, great honor,” says Shafroth. “It was humbling when I think of the many exceptional state and local leaders with whom and for whom I have been privileged to serve.”

NABL president-elect Allen Robertson, who chaired the awards committee, cited Shafroth’s many positions in his career in Washington, D.C.: staff in both the House and Senate, director of federal relations for both the National Governors Association and the National League of Cities, director of legislative affairs at the Municipal Securities Rulemaking Board and director of George Mason’s Center for State and Local Leadership.

“In all of those positions he has been a strong advocate for state and local governments and for tax-exempt financing in particular, from the enactment of Chapter 9 through the Tax Reform Act of 1986 and up to today,” Robertson said.
