George Mason University linguistics professor Steven Weinberger will be heard on the “With Good Reason” public radio interview show this week.

Weinberger, administrator of George Mason’s Speech Accent Archive based in the Department of English, explains how and when we develop accents and how they affect our identity. He also points out that people make judgments about a person and their background, based solely on their speech accent.

The interview with Weinberger is part of the segment “You sound like you’re not from around here,” which airs through September 27. The show can be heard locally on Mason’s radio station, WGMU, and on WAMU.88 FM. Broadcast times are posted at http://withgoodreasonradio.org/when-to-listen/.

Audio files of the full program and its companion news feature are also posted this week at the “With Good Reason” website.
