The Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), a survey conducted each year by China’s Shanghai Jiao Tong University, studies faculty and alumni data from 1,200 schools around the world. The ARWU calculates the highest ranking schools in groups of 50 after the top 100. Mason is among the top 150 to 200, holding the same position as last year.
“Obviously, we remain delighted with this important international recognition of Mason’s standing,” says Mason Provost Peter Stearns. “The ranking reflects particularly highly on our achievements in research and global outreach.”
Among the factors that determine the ranking is the number of alumni and faculty winning awards such as the Nobel Prize; the number of highly-cited researchers; the number of articles published in the journals Nature and Science; the number of articles indexed in Science Citation and Social Science Citation indexes; and “per capita” performance.
Mason ranks 44th in social sciences and in the top 75 for economics and business.
